Chapter 17

Heart of the Cards

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, please take your seats as the tournament is about to begin.”

The arena was packed. From the competitor box I got a bird’s eye view of the huge oval, seeing the stands absolutely packed with people of all races and ages. Those who had more money and status had the better seats while the poor had to squeeze in along narrow benches with bad views. Still, it seemed as though the entire city had shown up for the event. Even the various armored members of the Order of Silver lined the wall to the inner arena, most likely to keep anyone from going in.

Or maybe from anything getting out?

In our competitor box view, there were about fifty-ish people, mostly lizard and dragon people, who were each mainly keeping to themselves. When we had made it to the registration table it was just in time, since the lady running it said there were only three spots remaining: the perfect number. Toki had signed up a day before, so that left the last spots to me, Foggy, and, of course, Scrappy. I was curious how the [Rumble Rose] would do, but honestly, I’d take any chance of one of us making it to the end. I had already built some kind of small relationship with the Celestial God people as it was, so if I had the opportunity for another meet-and-greet session then maybe I could get a few of my burning questions answered, along with whatever else came from winning.

The crowd around me quieted as a new person walked out to the center of the arena, waving to the stands as he did so. This was a chicken-rabbit person, or he at least sort of looked like what I assumed a chicken-rabbit person would look like. Two big, floppy, white-feathered ears, round face with more white feathers, and a subtle hop whenever he would walk with his chicken-like legs and feet. His face was much more bunny than chicken, though he had one of those red dangly things under his chin. He wore a noble suit that was a rich shade of blue and trimmed with shiny silver accents which seemed to strain over his round chicken-body. He cleared his throat with a cluck and began to speak with his hands on his hips.

“Welcome! And thank you all for attending our 7th annual Battle Card Game Presents the Official Battle Card Game Tournament Battles!” He said, causing me to raise a brow as the crowd cheered.

“They couldn’t think of a better name than that?” I asked my allies. “Seems like a mouthful.”

“It does,” Toki answered quietly. “But as the founder it was his choice on what to name it.”

“I rather enjoy such a name,” Foggy added. “It lets us know it conveys the five principles that seem to govern this event. It is a battle, it involves cards, it is a game,
